Sunday Forenoon At The 'No Mention Teh Sarabat Stall'

On a brilliant together with sunny Dominicus morn inward Singapore, the fille together with I stepped out for a cosy girlie breakfast.. (read - likewise lazy to brand breakfast at home).

Wanting to convey to a greater extent than or less simple, wholesome, local fare - nosotros decided to caput out to i of the oldest Teh (Tea) stalls known…

Tucked away inward a niggling corner on Baghdad Street, this quaint niggling hole-in-the-wall cafe has been serving upwardly steaming Teh Sarabat (‘Pulled’ Milk Tea) since 1956 together with is maybe i of the cheapest local breakfasts you lot tin convey inward Singapore! (I haven't yet constitute anything cheaper… nosotros convey late relocated from Bombay to Singapore together with am even together with therefore converting dollars to rupees - together with therefore inexpensive oft agency yay!!)

The 'No Name Teh Sarabat Stall'

The cafe didn't convey a holler board for many years (still doesn't convey one) together with was eventually christened ‘No Name Teh Sarabat Stall’. At the stall, an old, bearded only real energetic Mr Zamir Ahmad, passionately serves upwardly a frothy loving cup of Teh Sarabat, something he has been doing for over 40 years now.

Teh Sarabat or Teh Tarik - is a hot milk tea potable made amongst dark tea together with condensed milk. The tea is 'tarik'ed (pulled) past times pouring it from i loving cup to to a greater extent than or less other together with back. Such 'pulled' tea is commonly served at Malay or Indian Muslim stalls (but maybe else where every bit well) inward Singapore. This version of tea is said to convey brought inward past times the Indian-Muslim immigrants into the Malay Peninsula post service World World II. In fact, inward Malaysia, Teh Tarik along amongst Nasi Lemak are declared a business office of the national nutrient & potable heritage.

The stall also offers to a greater extent than or less lip smacking snacks (seemed freshly prepared together with non together with therefore oily) - chicken samosas, fish cutlets, nasi lemak packets to go, Irish Gaelic patato puffs together with fresh buns amongst kaya & butter.

Seated on the al fresco tables on the side walk nigh the stall, I sampled i each of the chicken samosa, fish cutlet, Irish Gaelic patato puff together with the fresh buns (Yeah, I tin genuinely swallow all that past times myself) along amongst Teh Sarabat.. The fille was happy to nibble on the buns amongst kaya & butter. All that for less than S$ 8 … !

Sumptuous Snacks - Chicken Samosa, Fish Cutlet, Potato Puff together with Bun amongst Kaya & Butter

The Teh Sarabat was a tad sugariness for my gustation only frothy, flavoured together with comforting - this i goes into my listing of comforting teas (like the skilful former ‘tapri chai’ from Bombay or the ones I convey written well-nigh before - Çay inward Turkey together with Lebu Cha inward Kolkata).
